My name's Joe Schatz. I am a husband and father of three daughters and I recently moved back into area. I grew up attending St. Joseph's and have some great memories of this church starting from my CCD days back in the early 80s. All the changes to the parish, new buildings and updates, surprised me, but they all speak to the amazing potential of this parish and how God is at work. So, how did I decide to help start the high school program? After contacting St. Joseph's and speaking with Teresa, I discovered there wasn't a high school program at all. I felt the prompting of the Holy Spirit tell me that I should volunteer to change that.
For the past decade plus I have been working with the youth in our community either through coaching, running rec programs or working in student ministry--most notably, I have worked in the Havre de Grace Rec Committee, the White Marsh Rec Council, which I currently run a Homeschool Gym Program through, and in student ministry at the Church of the Nativity in Timonium. After speaking with Father Jesse and Teresa, we have decided to put mustard seed faith into action and start a high school program for this upcoming fall utilizing the Parish Hall on Sunday Evenings.
We are calling the program Beyond and it will be free and at zero cost for those attending. The aim is to take the faith of our students 'beyond.' As a committed Christ follower, fan of St. Thomas Aquinas, and an enthusiastic student of the faith, I plan on sharing how awesome our God is and how important the Gospels are to our lives--perhaps now more than ever. With the launch of the program coming in the fall, there are some great things to expect. Each evening will be planned to have the following three elements:
- Unstructured Hang-Out Time - Games, food & music (think board games, ping pong and pizza).
- Gospel Centered Message - Applying the word of God to the lives of our students, messages will be delivered by members of the student ministry team in a large group setting.
- Small Group - Time for the students to talk about the message through guided questions with a small group leader. The hope is for each group to grow to become friends on a faith journey discussing some of life's most compelling questions.
The high school program is new and that means we will need help getting the message out there. You will be hearing things about the program through parish wide communications in the near future, but we could use help. Feel free to tell people about the program. We currently need three things for the program:
- And, of course, Prayers
If you have any questions about the program or want to know how you could help, please contact me. I am looking forward to working with the youth of St. Joseph's and getting to know everyone in the Parish.
